2-1 Discussion: Professional Nursing Practice Issues and Ethical Impact

On a post discussion I have to Comment on the issues identified by others and the provisions affected by the selected issues.

THIS IS THE DISCUSSION THAT A STUDENT SENT.

While nursing has proven to be the most trusted profession year after year, it comes with its own set of difficulties and challenges. It seems as though; hospitals are on a constant push to hire nurses. Nursing shortages are a constant in the hospital setting and produce serious negative effects. “Inadequate or insufficient nurse staffing levels increase the risk of care being compromised, adverse events for patients, inferior clinical outcomes, in-patient death in hospitals and poorer patient experience of care.” (Aiken et al., 2014, p. 1), is a great example of those effects. Not only are patients at risk, shortages also negatively impact nurses worldwide, physically, mentally and emotionally.

Another concerning issue amongst nurses is nurse bullying in the workplace, especially concerning new nurses. A recent study found that; bullying is taking place at an alarming rate, where 1100 nurses were surveyed, 40% of the sample admitted to being bullied (Baek & Trinkoff, 2022). Nurse place bullying corrective action needs to be addressed as some of the negative outcomes include, psychosocial distress, sleep disturbances, depression, and turnover (Baek & Trinkoff, 2022).

The Code of Ethics for Nurses sets the standard for the profession, the above issues infringe on, provision 1.5, where nurses are to maintain professional and respectful relationships with colleagues (ANA, 2015). The second provision that is difficult to uphold is 4.1, upholding responsibilities and nursing care ordered by a healthcare provider (ANA, 2015). It is impossible to carry out every order when nursing shortages occur. Nursing shortages lead to unsafe patient ratios where patients as well as nurses are at risk for negative events and outcomes.
